Blue Pyrenees

Tasting Notes

Colour & Aroma

Deep dark garnet leading to a lighter ruby hue. Initially dense and brooding, but with agitation or decanting the wine opens like a flower, displaying classic Cabernet Sauvignon herbaceousness, with underlying blackcurrant, blackberry and capsicum with the nuance of exceptional vanilla oak characters derived from high quality new French oak.

Flavour

The palate displays graceful yet powerful classic Cabernet Sauvignon flavour. Typically herbaceous with an abundance of black fruits mint and cassis combined with elegant oak treatment that leads to a firm acid line and firm but soft tannins that lends itself to great ageing potential, however it is drinking beautifully now.

Winemaking Notes

The Richardson Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon wines are produced from the most exceptional parcels of fruit as identified by the Blue Pyrenees team; the same philosophy established in the 1990’s to create exceptional wine as a tribute to the late Colin Richardson. This wine was vinified and then matured in 37% new oak, before final blending and preparation for bottling. The nominated 2018 Cabernet grapes always displayed intense varietal characters as they reached optimum ripeness and balance on the vine, in the near perfect red grape growing season of 2017 / 2018. Vinification included warm fermentation, and extended skin contact for 2 weeks, before 24 months maturation in new French oak barriques, ensuring complexity, smoothness and integration of all the flavour components and fine tannin, before bottling in June 2020.
